The Problem With Zero-Based Budgeting When Income Is Irregular

Zero-based budgeting means assigning every ringgit a job before the month starts. Financial educators recommend it constantly. It also assumes you know how much money is coming in, which I did not. My freelance income varied between RM 2,800 and RM 6,400 depending on the month.

Where the method collapsed for me

I would build the budget on an optimistic income estimate, hit a slow month, and then watch every category go over simultaneously. The budget did not fail because of bad habits. It failed because the structure required certainty I did not have.

The floor budget approach

A financial planner I spoke with in Kuala Lumpur suggested building from a floor income instead. Take the lowest income month from the past 12 months and budget only from that number. Anything earned above the floor goes into a buffer account first, then gets allocated in the following week once it clears.

This meant my fixed expenses were always covered and variable categories only expanded when the buffer held enough to support them. It took two months to feel natural. The key shift was separating income arrival from spending permission, which zero-based budgeting does not do well when income is unpredictable.
